Our challenge is to transform the landscape for adult learners. The problem is complex. The goal of getting more adults with low skills adequately educated and trained clashes with the structures in place to support it. Millions of adult students are seeking degrees and employment in a system built largely for and around traditional students. Furthermore, with the increasing immigrant population with limited English speaking skills as well as deficiencies in their native language, it is clear that extra attention will need to be paid to this population to help them enter the workforce.
This brief overview of the needs of the Greater Lynn community provides a basis of what drives the behavior of a community based organization such as ours. Our behavior is driven by the needs of our community and what the organization can do to build and expand our capacity to continue to effectively serve our community residents.

In the past, Operation Bootstrap has depended to a great degree on state and federal funding. With the ebb and flow of the political landscape, Operation Bootstrap has to operate amid political battles, administration changes, and state and federal deficits. Yet the need for adult services has continued to increase, while the funding for our program has not increased, and the need for adult literacy and basic education services has continued to grow beyond the supply of services on the North Shore. In 2007, the Board of Directors of Operation Bootstrap made a strategic decision to change our funding model and to duplicate models that the community colleges and local universities use to solicit funds. This is where you can assist Operation Bootstrap through the selection of one of the plans listed above. Your donation affords us the opportunity to offer more classes, bring academically challenged students to new levels of academic success, and help them realize their hope for a brighter future.
Our strategic goals are to address our annual campaign, to add a capital campaign to seek a permanent home for Operation Bootstrap and to establish an endowment.
Which method of donation is best for you?
Cash donations can be sent to Operation Bootstrap at 156 Broad Street, Lynn, MA 01902. We also have various donation levels.
A donor can benefit in two ways:
- Claim a charitable income tax deduction for the full value of the shares. The deduction is limited to 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income.
- Avoid the capital gains tax that would have been due if he or she sold the shares.
